Visit Sierra de las Minas National Park: A Biodiverse Wonderland

What is there in Sierra de las Minas and why is it recommended to visit it?

It is another of the most important Mayan biospheres of Guatemala, it is a mountain chain of 240,537 hectares and is recognized by UNESCO in the program “Man and the biosphere”, comprising altitudes from 10 and 3,010 meters above sea level.

Due to its extent it is the largest in the region and is considered an irreplaceable seed bank for the reforestation and agroforestry of the tropics, being the largest habitat of the Quetzal, national bird of the country.

How to get

The key point to which you should go is to Rio Hondo in the Zacapa department, in this place you should head towards the Sierra de las Minas National Park. You can take a bus from Guatemala City.

To get to Rio Hondo you can buy bus tickets that go to Zacapa, Petén or Izabal on the CA-9, it is a route from the capital city of 70 kilometers. Then you should head to the entronque towards the Rancho and from here head to San Cristóbal Acasaguastlán. This last trip can take you 2 hours.
