Pacaya Volcano: Climbing an active volcano
Many visitors to Guatemala seek the adventure and experience of limbing a volcano in the country and what better than it being an active volcano with the possibility of being climbed.

The hike is 2.8 kilometers from the entrance to the end point of the climb. This is considered an easy section, but it has a significant level of difficulty, with steep and rocky paths. As you climb, the terrain becomes sandy, due to the nature of the volcano.
The ascent time is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes, taking certain breaks on your ascent.
How to get to the Pacaya Volcano?
The main route is along the South Coast on the CA-9 highway, at kilometer 36.5 you cross the municipality of San Vicente Pacaya on the paved road.
When you arrive at the place, you must demand your proof of payment and register your entry and exit from the park. You must hire a guide authorized by INGUAT for groups of 1 to 12 people, the rate is Q200 per guide.
Is it an active volcano?
Yes, it is an active volcano. The part of the cone of the volcano that emits eruptions and gases is called Mackenney Cone, it has been active since 1966. It has lava domes from the northwest and has a Strombolian type of eruption.
Can you reach the crater?
You cannot climb the crater due to its intense activity. Climbing has been prohibited for a few years due to the danger involved and there may be fines for doing so.
The closest to the crater is a sandy section, on the opposite end of the lava flow of the volcano, but if you manage to camp in this place, which is permitted, you will experience the rumblings and roars of the volcano.
