Nosara is a quiet Pacific beach town on the Nicoya Peninsula — part of one of the world's five Blue Zones, areas where people regularly live to 100+ years old. The town is a small grid of restaurants and yoga studios scattered through coastal jungle, anchored by three beaches: Playa Guiones (world-class surf), Playa Pelada (tide pools and sunsets), and Playa Nosara (river mouth, quieter). It's more upscale and remote than Tamarindo, with a strong yoga + wellness scene and a permanent expat retiree + remote-worker community.

Spring Bus connects you to operators running scheduled service into Nosara from Liberia (LIR) (~2.5 h by shuttle on a rough dirt road), San José (~5–6 h shuttle or a Sansa flight to NOB), Tamarindo (~2 h), Santa Teresa (~2.5 h), and Sámara (~30 min). Most international travelers fly to LIR and shuttle in; the Sansa flight from SJO to Nosara Airport (NOB) is much faster than the road.

How to get to Nosara by bus

Nosara is remote — the road from Liberia is partly rough dirt, so most travelers either fly Sansa to NOB or accept a long bumpy shuttle.

By Sansa flight to Nosara (NOB) — fastest

Sansa runs daily small-plane flights from SJO to Nosara (NOB) — ~50 minutes, $100 – $200 USD round-trip. The fastest and most comfortable option if you're entering through San José. Multiple daily flights in dry season; reduced schedule in rainy season.

By shuttle from Liberia (LIR)

Private shuttle from LIR airport — ~2.5 hours, $80 – $120 USD for the vehicle (1–6 passengers). The final 30 km is rough washboard dirt road that's hard on rental cars — many travelers don't drive themselves on this stretch. Scheduled shared shuttles also run on some days.

By shuttle from elsewhere in Costa Rica

Interbus and Gray Line run daily shared shuttles from San José (~5–6 h, $60 – $80 USD), Tamarindo (~2 h, $40 – $60), and Santa Teresa / Mal País (~2.5 h, $50 – $70). Most arrivals are from LIR or by Sansa flight rather than these longer routes.

About Nosara

Nosara sits inside one of the world's five Blue Zones — regions where statistically people live exceptionally long, healthy lives. The Nicoya Peninsula was identified as a Blue Zone in the early 2000s through research that found centenarians at rates significantly higher than the global average. The cause is debated (diet, social structure, mineral-rich water, daily physical activity) but the Blue Zone branding has shaped the town's wellness identity.

The town's three beaches each have a personality: Playa Guiones is the main surf break (~7 km of consistent beach break, world-class for intermediate-advanced surfers); Playa Pelada has tide pools and the sunset photo spot; Playa Nosara at the Nosara River mouth is quieter and good for paddleboarding. The wellness scene is anchored by Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort, Nosara Yoga Institute, and dozens of smaller retreats and daily drop-in classes.

Travel tips for getting to Nosara

  • Fly Sansa to Nosara Airport (NOB) if you're entering through SJO — 50 minutes vs 5–6 hours by shuttle. Easily the best option.
  • The road in from LIR has rough dirt stretches — most travelers don't drive themselves on this leg. A 4×4 rental is recommended if you do.
  • Playa Guiones is for surfers; Playa Pelada is for sunset photos. Both are walkable from town.
  • Yoga drop-in classes are easy to find — Bodhi Tree, Nosara Yoga Institute, Tribu, and many smaller studios. Most run multiple classes daily.
  • Nosara is more expensive than Tamarindo. Restaurants are upscale; budget options are limited. ATM access has improved in recent years.
  • Cell signal works but is patchy — restaurants and lodges have Wi-Fi. Bring a hat and reef-safe sunscreen for the beach.

Bus to Nosara — frequently asked questions

Two options: **Sansa flight from SJO to Nosara (NOB)** — ~50 minutes, $100 – $200 USD round-trip, the fastest. Or **private shuttle from Liberia (LIR)** — ~2.5 hours, $80 – $120 USD for the vehicle (1–6 passengers). Most international travelers do one or the other based on cost vs convenience.

**Playa Guiones is intermediate-to-advanced** — a consistent beach break that suits surfers who can already stand. **Playa Pelada** has occasional beginner waves but isn't a learn-to-surf beach. For first-time surfers, **Tamarindo or Sámara** are easier alternatives.

One of **five regions in the world** where statistically people live exceptionally long, healthy lives — Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica), Sardinia, Okinawa, Ikaria (Greece), Loma Linda (California). Researchers identified common factors: plant-heavy diet, daily physical activity, strong social ties, mineral-rich water, sense of purpose. Nosara sits inside the Nicoya Blue Zone.

**4×4 only**, and accept that the dirt road from LIR and the in-town roads will be rough on the vehicle. Many travelers don't rent a car — they shuttle in, walk + golf-cart within Nosara (golf carts are available for rent), and shuttle out. A car is most useful for visiting nearby beaches (Sámara, Playa Marbella).

**Tamarindo** if you want easier access (LIR ~1.5 h), beginner-friendly surf, more dining/nightlife, and lower prices. **Nosara** if you want a quieter, more upscale base, world-class surf at Playa Guiones, yoga + wellness scene, and the Blue Zone identity. Tamarindo is more developed and more commercial; Nosara is smaller and more aspirational.

**December through April** is dry season — best beach weather and most reliable shuttle/flight schedules. **May through November** is green/rainy season — daily afternoon showers, lower prices, fewer crowds, and (interestingly) some of the year's biggest swells for surfing.
