Cobán is the capital of Guatemala's Alta Verapaz department, set in the cloud-forest highlands at 1,320 m altitude. It's the regional transport hub and the gateway to Semuc Champey, Lanquín, the Candelaria Caves, and the wider coffee-growing region — Alta Verapaz is one of Guatemala's premier coffee origins.

Spring Bus connects you to operators running scheduled service into Cobán from Guatemala City (~4–5 h via the Monja Blanca Pullman line), Antigua (~5–6 h shuttle), Lanquín / Semuc Champey (~3–4 h), and Flores (~6–7 h). The cool, often-rainy climate makes Cobán feel distinctly different from the rest of the country.

How to get to Cobán by bus

Pullman bus from Guatemala City is the local standard. Shuttles are easier for travelers but cost more.

By Pullman bus from Guatemala City (most common)

Monja Blanca and Transportes Escobar run Pullman service from Guatemala City Zona 1 to Cobán — ~4–5 hours, Q60 – Q100 ($8 – $15 USD) depending on class. Buses run hourly during the day. Reserved seating; A/C on the better classes.

By shared shuttle from Antigua (more comfortable, longer)

Daily morning shuttles run from Antigua to Cobán — ~5–6 hours, $30 – $45 USD. Better for travelers who want a guaranteed seat and door-to-door drop-off. Many continue onward to Lanquín / Semuc Champey the next day.

By chicken bus (budget)

Local camionetas run from Centra Sur for around Q40 – Q60 ($5 – $8 USD). Plan 6+ hours and expect a crowded ride; the route climbs into the cloud forest with multiple stops.

About Cobán

Cobán was founded in 1538 by Dominican friars and is the colonial capital of Alta Verapaz. The central Catedral de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the Templo del Calvario, and the Vivero Verapaz (orchid nursery housing ~750 species, including Guatemala's national flower the monja blanca) are the main in-town sights. Coffee farm tours to Finca Santa Margarita and others operate in and around the city.

The region's Q'eqchi' Maya population maintains distinct dress, language, and traditions. The Folklórico Nacional Festival in late July draws Maya queens from across Guatemala for traditional dances and ceremonies. Beyond Cobán itself, the region is rich in caves (Lanquín, Candelaria, B'omb'il Pek), rivers (Cahabón, Polochic), and protected cloud forests.

Travel tips for getting to Cobán

  • Bring layers — Cobán averages 15–22 °C and is often rainy. The cloud forest is no joke.
  • The wettest months are May – October. Even "dry season" (Nov – Apr) gets occasional showers.
  • Pullman buses depart Guatemala City Zona 1 at the Monja Blanca / Escobar terminals — not Centra Sur.
  • Cobán is a working regional capital — useful for stocking up before heading deeper into Alta Verapaz (Lanquín, Semuc, Candelaria).
  • Most travelers use Cobán as a stopover en route to Semuc Champey (1–2 nights).
  • Coffee tours: book Finca Santa Margarita a day ahead in dry season.

Bus to Cobán — frequently asked questions

Monja Blanca Pullman buses take ~4–5 hours. Chicken buses can take 6+ hours with stops. Shared shuttles from Antigua take ~5–6 hours (passing through Guatemala City).

For most travelers it's a one-night stopover on the way to Semuc Champey. If you have extra time, the **orchid nursery** (Vivero Verapaz), **coffee farm tours**, and **Q'eqchi' cultural events** make a full day worthwhile — especially during the Folklórico Nacional Festival in late July.

Daily morning shuttles run from Cobán to Lanquín — ~3–4 hours, $15 – $25 USD. From Lanquín, the final leg to Semuc is by 4×4 truck (~30 min, $5 – $10). Most hostels at Semuc include the truck transfer in their booking.

Cool and often wet. Daytime highs around 22 °C, nights as low as 12 °C. The cloud forest produces a fine drizzle (locally called *chipi-chipi*) that can last days, even in the dry season. Always pack a rain layer.

Yes — multiple ATMs in central Cobán (BAM, Banrural, Banco Industrial). Stock up here before continuing to Lanquín or Semuc, where ATMs don't work reliably or don't exist.

Cobán is one of the quieter regional capitals — generally safe during daytime and in the central area. Standard urban precautions apply at night. The road between Cobán and Lanquín is windy but well-trafficked.
