La Fortuna is the town at the foot of the Arenal Volcano, an iconic perfect cone that was Costa Rica's most active volcano from 1968 until it entered a dormant phase in 2010. The volcano itself is now quiet, but the surrounding area is one of Costa Rica's top eco-tourism hubs — hot springs, hanging bridges, the La Fortuna Waterfall, Río Celeste day trips, kayaking on Lake Arenal, and the famous Jeep–Boat–Jeep crossing to Monteverde.

Spring Bus connects you to operators running scheduled service into La Fortuna from San José (~3 h by Interbus), Monteverde (Jeep–Boat–Jeep, ~3 h), Manuel Antonio (~5 h), Tamarindo (~4 h), and Nicaragua border at Peñas Blancas (~4 h). Most travelers spend 2–3 nights here as part of a standard Costa Rica circuit.

About La Fortuna / Arenal

The Arenal Volcano rose to fame after a devastating 1968 eruption that destroyed two villages. From 1968 to 2010, it was one of the world's most consistently active volcanoes — daily lava flows visible from La Fortuna. Since 2010 it has been dormant (officially "in a resting phase"); no eruptions, but still considered active. The volcano remains the visual icon of the area, with the Arenal Volcano National Park offering hiking trails through the old lava fields.

The surrounding area is built around three main attractions: hot springs (six major resorts — Tabacón, Baldí, Eco Termales, Springs Resort, Los Lagos, Paradise Hot Springs); canopy + hanging bridges (Mistico Hanging Bridges, Sky Adventures Arenal); and the La Fortuna Waterfall (a 70-meter cascade, $18 USD entry, swimmable). The day trip to Río Celeste (~2 hours each way) leads to a surreal turquoise river inside Tenorio Volcano National Park — one of Costa Rica's most-photographed natural sites.

Travel tips for getting to La Fortuna / Arenal

  • Hot springs are best in the evening. Tabacón is the upscale option ($85+ pp); Baldí is more affordable ($45); Eco Termales is small and quiet ($55, advance reservation).
  • Río Celeste day trip is long but worthwhile — ~2 hours each way to Tenorio Volcano National Park. Most tours include the hike to the waterfall + the famous turquoise river confluence.
  • The La Fortuna Waterfall hike is steep — 500 stairs down and back up. Bring water, swim suit.
  • Rainy season May–November. Daily afternoon showers, more dramatic mist and clouds — actually a good time for hot springs.
  • Lake Arenal is great for kayaking and SUP when wind is calm; the lake is also windsurfer-popular.
  • The town of La Fortuna is small and walkable. Most lodging is along the road heading west toward the volcano.
