Roatán is the largest of Honduras's three Bay Islands in the Caribbean Sea, sitting directly on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second-longest barrier reef in the world after Australia's. It's world-famous among scuba divers for excellent visibility, affordable certification, and dramatic wall dives. Beyond diving, Roatán is the most-developed Bay Island, with beach resorts at West Bay, the backpacker / dive village at West End, and a major cruise port at Mahogany Bay near Coxen Hole.

Spring Bus connects you to operators serving Roatán by ferry, road, and air — most travelers arrive by direct international flight to Roatán International Airport (RTB) from US cities (Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, NYC), or by the 75-minute Galaxy Wave ferry from La Ceiba on the mainland. Domestic flights from San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa serve travelers connecting through Honduran hubs.

How to get to Roatán by bus

Roatán is reached by direct international flight (most common), by ferry from La Ceiba, or by domestic flight from mainland Honduras.

By direct international flight (RTB) — easiest

Roatán International Airport (RTB) has direct seasonal and year-round flights from Houston (United, Spirit), Miami (American), Atlanta (Delta), Fort Lauderdale, NYC, Newark, Charlotte, and Toronto. Most international travelers fly direct — bypasses mainland Honduras entirely. Airport is ~5 minutes from West End by taxi.

By Galaxy Wave ferry from La Ceiba

Galaxy Wave and Roatan Marine Ferry run from La Ceiba's Muelle de Cabotaje to Roatán's Dixon Cove — ~75 minutes, $30 – $50 USD one-way. Two departures daily (typically 9:30am and 4:30pm; verify current schedules). Reserved-seat A/C ferry; can get rough crossing in stormy weather.

By domestic flight from SAP or TGU

CM Airlines and Avianca run multiple daily flights from San Pedro Sula (SAP) to Roatán — ~30 minutes, $50 – $100 USD one-way. From Tegucigalpa ~1 hour, $80 – $150 USD. Many international travelers do same-day connections through SAP.

About Roatán

Roatán is a long, narrow island (~50 km × 5 km) with reef on both sides. West End is the village travelers think of when they say "Roatán" — backpacker hotels, dive shops, restaurants, and a sand street ending at the beach. West Bay is the resort beach 10 minutes south, with white sand and the island's main hotels. Coxen Hole is the working town with the airport and supermarkets. Sandy Bay between West End and Coxen Hole has the Roatán Marine Park office.

Diving is the main draw — over 80 dive sites around the island, with shallow shore dives, wall dives, wrecks, and channel swim-throughs. Visibility 20–30+ meters; water 27–29°C year-round. Open Water PADI certification runs ~$350 – $450 USD all-in. Roatán Marine Park charges a $10 USD weekly conservation fee (included in most dive packages). Hyperbaric chamber on the island.

Travel tips for getting to Roatán

  • West End for backpackers/divers; West Bay for resort beach. West End is walkable; West Bay is taxi/boat from West End.
  • Direct US flights are the easiest way in. Many travelers don't touch mainland Honduras at all.
  • Roatán Marine Park fee ($10 USD/week) is required for diving — most shops include it.
  • Best diving: December to August (calmest seas). September–November is more weather-dependent.
  • USD is universal on Roatán. Lempira is rarely needed.
  • The Galaxy Wave ferry can be rough. Take motion-sickness meds an hour before if susceptible.

**West End** for backpacker, dive shops, restaurants, lower prices, walkable village with sand main street. **West Bay** for resort beach experience, white sand, snorkeling from the beach, upscale hotels. Many travelers stay at West End and day-trip to West Bay by water taxi or 10-minute drive.

Yes — Roatán is widely considered safe for travelers. The Bay Islands are culturally distinct from mainland Honduras (English-speaking Bay Islander population, large expat community). Standard beach precautions apply (don't leave valuables on the beach, etc.). The mainland Honduras crime reputation does not extend to the islands.
