El Zonte is a small Pacific coast surf village ~20 minutes west of El Tunco — quieter, smaller, and with a global reputation as "Bitcoin Beach" thanks to the 2019 community-led project that built a circular Bitcoin economy in the village and helped inspire El Salvador's 2021 Bitcoin Legal Tender Law. Many local businesses, restaurants, and hostels still accept BTC; the village hosts an annual Adopting Bitcoin conference and remains a destination for crypto-curious travelers.

Beyond the crypto angle, El Zonte offers consistent surf at the river-mouth break (a fast right-hander, for intermediate-to-advanced surfers), a quieter alternative to El Tunco's busier scene, and a small cluster of yoga-oriented hostels and boutique stays. Spring Bus connects you to operators running tourist shuttles from San Salvador (~1 hour, $10 – $20 USD) and El Tunco (~20 min). The public Bus 192 from La Libertad runs ~$1 USD as the budget option.

About El Zonte

El Zonte sits at the mouth of a small river running to the Pacific — the village is split into a beach side (hostels and bars near the sand) and an inland side along the highway. Surf breaks at the river mouth and at the point produce consistent rights that work April – October on southern swells; the wave is faster and more technical than El Tunco's Sunzal, less crowded but with fewer beginner-friendly options. Beach is dark volcanic sand with rocky tidepools and small natural pools at low tide.

The Bitcoin Beach project (founded 2019) made El Zonte famous globally — local restaurants, the village convenience store, surf schools, and several hostels accept Bitcoin via Lightning wallets. The annual Adopting Bitcoin conference brings the international Bitcoin community to the village. Whether or not you care about crypto, the village has retained a quieter, more community-oriented vibe compared to El Tunco's larger scene — more yoga, more long-stay surf workers, fewer weekend party crowds.

Travel tips for getting to El Zonte

  • Quieter than El Tunco — better for surf-focused stays + a slower pace. El Tunco is the party + nightlife scene.
  • Best surf: April – October. River-mouth right is faster and more technical than El Tunco's Sunzal.
  • Bitcoin payments are real here. Many places accept BTC via Lightning. Bring USD cash too — not everywhere does.
  • The village is small. A handful of hostels and hotels; book ahead in peak surf season (May–August).
  • Combine with El Tunco — 20 minutes apart by car, easy to split time between the two beaches.
  • Tide-pool walks at low tide on the rocky stretches between the beaches.
