Tegucigalpa ("Tegus" locally) is Honduras's capital, set in a mountain valley at 990 m altitude. It has two airports — Toncontín (TGU), famous for its short runway and difficult approach, now used mainly for domestic flights, and Palmerola International Airport (XPL), ~70 km north, which took over most international traffic in 2021. The city is less-touristed than San Pedro Sula but serves as the transit hub for southern Honduras and cross-border service to Nicaragua (Las Manos border) and El Salvador (El Amatillo border).

Spring Bus connects you to operators running scheduled service into and out of Tegucigalpa. Hedman Alas runs to San Pedro Sula (~4 h), Copán Ruinas (~6–7 h), and La Ceiba (~7–8 h). TicaBus, Pullmantur, and King Quality run international Pullman service connecting Tegucigalpa with Managua (Nicaragua), San Salvador (El Salvador), Guatemala City, and onward through Central America.

How to get to Tegucigalpa by bus

Tegucigalpa is reached by international flight to Palmerola (XPL), Hedman Alas Pullman from anywhere in Honduras, or international bus from neighboring countries.

By air to Palmerola (XPL) or Toncontín (TGU)

Palmerola International (XPL), ~70 km north of Tegucigalpa, is the main international airport since 2021 — direct flights from Houston, Miami, Atlanta. Allow ~1 hour by taxi or shuttle from XPL to central Tegucigalpa, ~$30 – $50 USD. Toncontín (TGU) still handles domestic flights (Roatán, La Ceiba) and a few regional international flights; it's much closer to the city, ~15 minutes by taxi.

By Hedman Alas Pullman bus

Hedman Alas runs daily Pullman service from San Pedro Sula (~4 h, $15 – $25 USD), Copán Ruinas (~6–7 h, $20 – $35), and La Ceiba (~7–8 h, $25 – $40). Reserved seats, A/C, the standard for travelers. The Hedman Alas terminal is in eastern Tegucigalpa.

By international Pullman bus (TicaBus, Pullmantur, King Quality)

International lines run scheduled service to Managua (~7–8 h, $30 – $50 USD), San Salvador (~7–9 h, $25 – $40), Guatemala City (~10–12 h, $40 – $60), and onward to San José, Panama City. Border formalities add 1–2 hours each way. The international terminals are separate from Hedman Alas — confirm yours at booking.

About Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa is the political and administrative capital of Honduras, set in a steep mountain valley surrounded by pine-covered hills. The city splits across two banks of the Río CholutecaTegucigalpa proper (eastern side, where most government and middle-class neighborhoods are) and Comayagüela (western side, more working-class, where many bus terminals are). The colonial center anchored by Plaza Morazán is small and walkable in a half-day.

Tourist appeal is limited compared to San Pedro Sula's airport role or the Bay Islands. The Museo del Hombre Hondureño and Galería Nacional de Arte are the main museums; the colonial Iglesia de los Dolores and Iglesia La Merced are the main religious architecture. Picacho Park above the city offers panoramic views. Day trips include Valle de Ángeles (colonial silver-mining village, ~30 min) and Santa Lucía (small colonial mountain town, ~25 min).

Travel tips for getting to Tegucigalpa

  • Palmerola (XPL) is the international airport since 2021 — not Toncontín (TGU). XPL is ~70 km / ~1 hour from central Tegucigalpa; budget for the transfer time.
  • Stay in residential Lomas del Mayab or Colonia Florencia Norte for safer upscale areas. Avoid Comayagüela for overnight.
  • Use Uber. Works well in Tegucigalpa and is safer + cheaper than street taxis.
  • Hedman Alas terminal is east of downtown — not centralized with international bus terminals. Confirm yours at booking.
  • Valle de Ángeles day trip is a pleasant escape — colonial silver-mining village, 30 min away, handicrafts and lunch.
  • USD is accepted at major hotels and Pullman bus lines. Lempira for taxis, restaurants, small shops.

Bus to Tegucigalpa — frequently asked questions

**Palmerola (XPL)** is the newer international airport, ~70 km north of Tegucigalpa, used for most US flights since 2021. **Toncontín (TGU)** is the old in-city airport — short runway, famous for difficult approaches — now used for domestic Honduras flights and a few regional international. If you're flying internationally to Honduras's capital, it's almost certainly XPL.

Taxi or pre-arranged shuttle — **~1 hour, $30 – $50 USD** per person. Some hotels offer transfers; otherwise pre-book with operators at the airport. The road is well-paved CA-5 highway.

The main crossing is **Las Manos** (CA-1 / Pan-American Highway). **TicaBus** and **King Quality** run direct Pullman service Tegucigalpa → Managua (~7–8 hours including border), $30 – $50 USD. Border formalities ~1–2 hours each way. Have a small USD cash buffer for Nicaragua entry fees.

**Lomas del Mayab** and **Colonia Florencia Norte** for upscale residential safety. **Colonia Palmira** has the diplomatic quarter and some hotels. **Boulevard Morazán** has business hotels. **Avoid Comayagüela for overnight stays** — it's where bus terminals are but has higher crime rates. The Hedman Alas terminal is in safer eastern Tegucigalpa.

The safe districts (Lomas del Mayab, Florencia Norte, Palmira, the Hedman Alas terminal area, Boulevard Morazán) are routinely used by travelers and business visitors. **Comayagüela** and the central downtown have higher crime rates — use Uber, don't walk at night, don't flash valuables. The city's reputation is worse than the actual experience for travelers who stay in the safe districts.

**Most travelers spend 0–1 nights** — transiting through for flights or international bus connections to Nicaragua/El Salvador. If you do stay, 1 day is enough for the historic center + the main museums. **Valle de Ángeles day trip** adds a pleasant half-day if you have extra time.
