Mérida is the capital of Yucatán state and the cultural heart of the Yucatán Peninsula — a colonial city of pastel-painted buildings, the Paseo de Montejo boulevard lined with French-influenced 19th-century mansions, and one of Mexico's most distinct regional cuisines (cochinita pibil, papadzules, sopa de lima). It's also the standard base for visiting Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, and the cenotes of the Yucatán's Ring of Cenotes.

Spring Bus connects you to operators running scheduled service into Mérida from Cancún (~4 h by ADO), Playa del Carmen (~4 h), Tulum (~4 h), Campeche (~2 h), and (overnight) from Mexico City (~17 h). The new Tren Maya also serves Mérida from Cancún and Palenque. Below are the standard routes.

How to get to Mérida by bus

Mérida is reached by ADO Pullman bus from anywhere in the Yucatán Peninsula, or by direct flight to Mérida International Airport (MID).

By ADO Pullman bus (most common)

ADO runs frequent Pullman service from Cancún (~4 h), Playa del Carmen (~4 h), Tulum (~4 h), and Campeche (~2 h). Fares MXN $400 – $700 ($25 – $40 USD). The CAME terminal is the main first-class ADO station in Mérida; second-class buses use Terminal Noreste and Terminal de Autobuses Mérida (TAME).

By air (Mérida International Airport — MID)

MID has direct flights from Mexico City (~2 h, multiple daily on Aeroméxico, Volaris, Viva Aerobus), Houston, and Miami. Airport is ~10 km from the historic center; taxis run ~MXN $200 – $300 ($12 – $18 USD).

By Tren Maya (since 2024)

The new Tren Maya runs Cancún → Valladolid → Chichén Itzá → Mérida and onward to Campeche and Palenque. Mérida's Teya Station is just east of the city. Schedules are still being expanded but the route is a scenic alternative to ADO for Cancún → Mérida.

About Mérida

Mérida was founded in 1542 on top of an existing Maya city (T'hó), and the colonial center reflects that history — Plaza Grande, the 16th-century Cathedral of San Ildefonso, and the Casa de Montejo anchor the old town. The wealth of 19th-century henequen (sisal) production is visible in the French-influenced mansions along Paseo de Montejo, the city's most photogenic boulevard.

Mérida is the standard base for visiting Chichén Itzá (UNESCO, ~1.5 h east), Uxmal (~1 h south), the Ruta Puuc of smaller Maya sites, and the cenotes scattered around the surrounding Yucatán plains. The food scene is one of Mexico's most distinct — cochinita pibil, panuchos, papadzules, sopa de lima — heavily influenced by Maya and Caribbean traditions.

Travel tips for getting to Mérida

  • Stay near Plaza Grande or Santiago neighborhood for walkable access to the historic center.
  • Hot and humid year-round — peak heat April–June. Hotels with pools are worth it.
  • ADO CAME terminal is the main first-class station — confirm your departure terminal at booking.
  • Sunday morning the historic center closes to cars and becomes one big market/festival. Don't miss it.
  • Chichén Itzá day trip is doable by ADO (~1.5 h each way) — go early to beat heat and crowds. Tour operators also run packages with cenote stops.
  • Cash for cenotes and small markets; cards work everywhere in the historic center.

~4 hours by ADO Pullman bus, multiple daily departures. ADO GL and Platino classes are slightly faster (fewer stops). Fare **MXN $400 – $700 ($25 – $40 USD)** depending on class.

Yes — ADO runs an early morning bus from Mérida CAME terminal to Chichén Itzá (~1.5 hours, MXN $150 – $250). Plan to arrive at 8 a.m. when the ruins open to beat the heat and tour crowds, then catch the afternoon ADO back. Tour operators also offer day-trip packages with cenote stops.

**Centro Histórico (around Plaza Grande)** for walkable colonial atmosphere. **Santiago neighborhood** for a quieter, more residential feel still close to the center. **Paseo de Montejo** for upscale boutique hotels in 19th-century mansions. Avoid the outskirts unless you have a car.

**Hot and humid year-round** — average highs 30–35 °C. Peak heat April–June (daily highs 35–40 °C). Rainy season June–October brings afternoon thunderstorms. Nov–March is the most pleasant for visitors (highs ~28 °C, lower humidity).

**November through March** for the most comfortable weather. **Día de los Muertos (Oct 31–Nov 2)** and **Carnaval (February)** are major local festivals worth planning around. Avoid April–June if you can't handle 35–40 °C heat.

Two options: **fly** (multiple daily on Aeroméxico, Volaris, Viva Aerobus, ~2 h, $80 – $200 USD round-trip), or **overnight ADO bus** (~17 h, $60 – $120 USD). Most travelers fly — the bus is a long ride for similar cost when booked in advance.
