The Flores to Semuc Champey shuttle connects the Tikal region directly with the turquoise limestone pools of Alta Verapaz, sparing travelers the long detour through Guatemala City. It's a backpacker favorite for stringing together Guatemala's north and center, run as a full-day tourist shuttle via Sayaxché and Chisec. Because Semuc has no town of its own, you're dropped in Lanquín, its gateway village. Spring Bus connects you with the operators covering this scenic inland route.
Adrenalina Tours and Atitrans run the main shuttles, with Lanquín hostels like Zephyr Lodge sometimes operating their own services bundled with the final 4x4 to the pools. Vehicles are minibuses, and the day includes rest stops. Confirm whether your fare covers the pickup-truck leg from Lanquín out to Semuc Champey or your hostel, and book a day ahead since this route typically runs just once each morning.

About the journey
This cross-Petén shuttle takes the inland route southwest rather than the highway, so expect a mix of pavement and rough patches. From Flores the road heads to Sayaxché, where in the past a river ferry crossed the Río de la Pasión, then continues south through Chisec in the heart of the karst country — limestone caves, sinkholes and lush jungle. The terrain grows hilly as you approach Alta Verapaz, the road narrowing and roughening on the descent toward Lanquín. You'll pass cardamom and coffee plantations and a string of small Q'eqchi' Maya villages. The final stretch into the Lanquín valley is steep and bumpy, but it's a more direct line than looping through Cobán, trimming the 280 km to a manageable day's drive.
Travel tips for Flores → Semuc Champey
- Take the morning shuttle. The single daily departure leaves around 7–8 AM; with 7–8 hours of mostly rough road, you want to arrive in Lanquín before dark.
- This route saves a day. Going via Sayaxché and Chisec is far more direct than routing through Guatemala City, so it's worth booking even if it's bumpier.
- Bring motion-sickness tablets. The descent into Alta Verapaz and the approach to Lanquín are winding and partly unpaved.
- Carry enough cash. ATMs near Lanquín are unreliable; bring small bills for the Semuc entrance fee, the 4x4 transfer, and meals.
- Remember Lanquín isn't the pools. The shuttle ends in Lanquín village; a separate pickup truck covers the last 10 km to Semuc Champey and the hostels.
- Pack snacks and water. Rest stops on this inland route are basic and irregular, with no proper meal service aboard.
